Abrasives are generally classified as natural or synthetic.
The key characteristics include:
- Particle size (maximum size and size distribution)
- Shape (rounded, angular etc.)
- Density
- Hardness (value expressed in Mohs)
Mohs is a scale of hardness (1 – 10) where a higher number denotes a greater resistance to scratching.
(e.g. copper coin - 5, window glass - 6 & diamond - 10)

CALCITE 140
3 Mohs hardness
Supplied in 25kg bags on 1 tonne pallet
Granules are more rounded and opaque than those of Dolomite.
Our Calcite abrasive is denoted as ‘140 micron’ grade, ˃200 microns.
Natural, fine and ‘soft’.
It can be used selectively to remove softer oxidations, but retain harder ones.
Used primarily for cleaning, it is not generally suited to coating removal

DOLOMITE 140
4 Mohs hardness
Supplied in 25kg bags on 1 tonne pallet.
Note the ‘cuboid’ shape and transluscent appearance.
Our Calcite abrasive is ‘140 micron’ grade, >200 microns.
Natural, fine and ‘soft’.
Used for cleaning and lighter coating removal.

ALUMINIUM SILICATE 250
7 Mohs hardness
Supplied in 25kg bags on 1.05 tonne pallet.
Granules are synthetic and vitreous in appearance.
The most popular of our two grades of Aluminium Silicate and ‘250 micron’ grade.
Best suited for coating removal and cleaning of tough substrates.
Not suitable for terracotta
ALUMINIUM SILICATE 180
7 Mohs hardness
Supplied in 25kg bags on 1.05 tonne pallet.
Granules are synthetic and vitreous in appearance.
One of our two grades of Aluminium Silicate, this picture is ofour finer ‘180 micron’ grade.
Best suited for light coating removal and cleaning of tough substrates.
